William Carlisle was born in Ireland about 1797 and died in 1867. In 1850, he was living with his wife Mary A (poss. Buchanan) in Kershaw, South Carolina, two daughters and two sons. In the same year, Carlisle enslaved nine human beings, the youngest was a baby girl aged one.
