Due to numerous requests, it has been decided to prioritise the upload of a bare minimum of information for every Irish slaveholder/trader/overseer known to the project. In this way every person researching in South Carolina will have a starting point for their research. Once this is completed, we hope to return to a more in-depth search for the people enslaved by individual slaveholders.
If you use information found here please acknowledge the source of your research as follows www.enslavement-to-citizenship.com/#/ Martine Brennan, Ireland ...and thank you. Sept. 2023 |

Please note that county/district boundaries changed over time. New counties were created and boundaries changed. The maps used below are of the counties today and may not correspond to the boundaries in use in documents 1670-1865. Therefore, you may find records of Irish slaveholders and the people they enslaved, in different counties than those identified here. In some cases, Irish slaveholders owned farms and plantations in more than one county or they had a city residence and a country residence. If you are engaged in deeper research on any one Irish slaveholder, county boundary changes will affect where you can find records.
To give a sense of perspective, Ireland and South Carolina are almost equal in size.
Prior to the U.S. Federal Census 1850, place of birth was not identified in the Census. It is challenging to identify the Irish-born slaveholders in the period 1670-1850. This database will expand as we uncover more records.
