Wlliam Herbert, a merchant, was born in Ireland about 1813. In 1850, he lived in Schultz Township, Hamburg, Edgefield, South Carolina with his wife May L Herbert (also Irish-born) and their children. He enslaved a 25 year old woman and a ten year old girl.
