James Murphy was born in Ireland about 1798 and is recorded as living in Union County, South Carolina in 1850 with his wife Elizabeth and children Joseph, Nancy, Madison and Marion. Joshua Perry Murphy and Rebecca Murphy are also recorded in the household. In 1850, James Murphy enslaved twelve people. They appear to be recorded in two family groups, a woman aged 34 with children aged 14, 12, 11, 9, 5, 3 and a newborn and a man aged 25, a woman aged 20 and two children aged 4 and 2.
