Matthew Sandford was born in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, Ireland about 1792 and was buried in Dungannon Plantation, Charleston County, South Carolina in 1859. In 1850, he was living in St. Paul's Parish, Colleton, SC. In that year he enslaved 40 people. Dungannon Plantation is now a Wildlife Management Area and Heritage Preserve.
